How High the Crime?
19 October 2005
4 10:56

So Saddam is on trial, and no one has any clue as to the whereabouts of Osama.

Yes, these men are both great evildoers, but let us not be distracted from the greater by the capture and potential service of justice to the lesser.

Further, let us not be so quick in our celebration of the capture and trial of one man that we forget who put him in the position to do the great damage, to commit the catastrophic evil that he did: It was us.

The United States of America basically placed Saddam Hussein in power, and the entire world is far too quick to forget this fact. Yes, we also removed him from power, through much violence and loss of life to our own people and those of other nations, but will those who actually put this twisted megalomaniac in power ever be brought to justice themselves?

Are not those who place power in the hands of a criminal named criminals?

"'Tis the fortune of bankers and builders of arms
To worship the profit however it comes,
Up in their towers, sheltered from harm,
Far from the smoke and the sound of the drums."
(Judy Collins, "Fortune of Soldiers")

Damn them.
